BIG DATA  Site specific work  for Art Souterrain 2018 -Labor Improbus, Montreal, Canada 3- 25 March

Sally Gorham is an English artist who’s artistic practice is mainly based on a twenty-five years of experience in the field of management. The artist has created a very geometric artistic language, directly inspired by the world of management and more particularly graphs used to carry out comparisons studies. Gorham works question the issue of collection and merchandising of our personal data on the internet.

Big data is an abstract window installation. In a geometric aesthetic referring to the business world, Sally Gorham ironically presents the extent to which our personal datas has become a source of speculation and enrichment. The use of primary and complementary colours attracts the eye of visitors and makes as much reference to the history of abstract art as to the colours of some large companies. The shapes represent the data from the “Montreal Metropolis of Talent” study. Avenues for action to improve employment, innovation and skills “ published in 2017 by the Organization for Economic Co-operation.

Viral investigates its own political condition of production and circulation. It subverts both the notion of authorship and commodification by involving others in its production and by offering the potential to be rearranged by the viewer. Through the use of  industrial material and outsourced  industrial fabrication  the artist becomes what John Roberts describes as the "artist as monteur/assembly manage". The title of the work refers to ways in which ‘alternative truths’ and fabricated facts have pervaded our lives.
